Suspect in Liverpool parade incident charged with seven serious offences after ploughing car into crowd and leaving 79 injured

A man has been charged after a car ploughed into fans celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title victory.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Merseyside Police have confirmed 53-year-old Paul Doyle, from West Derby, Liverpool, has been charged after a car rammed into supporters during a bus parade as the club celebrated their Premier League title success. He faces multiple accounts of causing, and attempting to cause unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm on top of two counts of unlawful and and malicious wounding with intent.

    As many as 79 people were left injured during the incident on Monday, with the victims' ages ranging from nine to 78 years old. Seven of them remain in hospital.

  • WHAT THE POLICE SAID

    Sarah Hammond, the chief crown prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: "The investigation is at an early stage.

    "Prosecutors and police are continuing to work at pace to review a huge volume of evidence.

    "This includes multiple pieces of video footage and numerous witness statements.

    "It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve."

    Jenny Sims, assistant chief constable of Merseyside Police, added: "I fully understand how this incident has left us all shocked and saddened, and I know many will continue to have concerns and questions.

    "Our detectives are working tirelessly, with diligence and professionalism, to seek the answer to all of those questions. When we are able to, we will provide further information."

    Doyle has been remanded in custody and will appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Friday May 30.
